Rene de Montluzin, Jr.
[Jean Rene Gabriel Viallier de Terradoux de Montluzin du Sauzay, Jr.]
September 10, 1910 - January 2, 1977
Rene de Montluzin, Jr., bom on September 10, 1910, was the only child of his parents, Rene de Montluzin, Sr., and Ovenia Word de Montluzin. He was a lifelong resident of Bay St. Louis, a graduate of St. Stanislaus College, and First Honor Graduate (valedictorian) of the College of Pharmacy of Loyola University in New Orleans.
A third-generation pharmacist, he was the owner of L. A. de Montluzin Son Drug Store, founded in 1878 by his grandfather, Ludovic Adrien de Montluzin, and continued by his father and mother as a family business of great service to the community.
When the United States entered World War II after the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941, Rene enlisted immediately in the U. S. Coast Guard and was sent to New London, Connecticut, where, as Chief Pharmacist Mate, he was stationed in charge of the pharmacy in the Coast Guard Academy hospital until the war ended in 1945.
Upon his return to Bay St. Louis he and his wife, the former Emily Dale Hosmer of Greenwood, Mississippi, relieved his parents of their responsibility of keeping the drugstore open and soon embarked upon a course of community service. Rene became active in the Rotary Club, the American Legion, and the Masonic Lodge and served for five years as a member of the Bay St. Louis Municipal School Board. During his tenure on the board the Ingram Grammar School and the Valena C. Jones School were built. He was a charter member of the Bay-Waveland Yacht Club and of the Bay-Waveland Little Theatre, receiving from the latter the President?s Award for Service, presented for his diligent work as a member of the theatre?s board of directors. He served for a term as president of the Rotary Club, and it was during his presidency that the Rotary Club was instrumental in bringing natural gas to Bay St. Louis,
Rene was a lifelong and faithful member of Christ Episcopal Church, for years a vestryman and church treasurer. He was an active participant in the founding of Christ Episcopal Day School and its strong supporter until his death, giving the Valedictorian?s Cup each year in recognition of academic excellence.
Rene?s drugstore, the fifth in Mississippi, survived five major hurricanes in its 92 years of existence but was destroyed by Hurricane Camille in 1969. A few months later Rene reopened in a new location on Main Street and continued to keep up family business traditions as an independent pharmacist until his death on January 2, 1977. He was survived by his wife and by his daughter, Emily Lorraine de Montluzin.
