OUR TOWN'S BACKGROUND
AND CHARACTERISTICS
Bay Saint Louis, the county seat of Hancock County, is located on the Bay of Saint Louis and on U. S. Highway 90, about sixty miles from New Orleans. Its first settlers were Choctaw Indians, many of whose descendants are citizens of the town today. In 1699 the French explorer Bienville and five of his men landed on our shores on the birthday of Louis IX and named this body of water the Bay of Saint Louis.
In January, 1858, the citizens of the small town, which had sprung up here as a result of French shipping through the bay, organized themselves, chose a mayor-and aldermen, and called their settlement the City of Shieldsboro. In February, 1882, an ordinance was passed, changing the name of the town to Bay Saint Louis.	*
The population of Bay Saint Louis, according to the 1950 census, is 4,664, which represents an increase of over 500 over the 1940 figure of 4,148. Most of the town’s revenue comes from tourist business, commuters’ trade, and fishing. Like most small towns, ours has many and varied civic and social organizations.
