THE SEA COAST ECHO • BRIDGES OVER THE BAY

the service. The ferry will run until all of the cars going over from the Bay are returned to this side..."
Many of the old timers -such as my father-in-law -when I was a youngster growing up in Bay St. Louis and Waveland told me about the great times the ferry would provide, especially on Saturday
nights.
There would be dances and parties on the ferry with bands and all types of refreshments; they would, the old-timers said, just push out in the Bay and anchor during the night.
In The Echo's Golden Anniversary edition in January, 1942, a lengthy story told much about the
1928 bridge which replaced the ferry across the bay.
"Bay St. Louis Bridge connects Coast and all points East and West — Cost Three-Quarters of Million Dollars — Maintenance cost over $5,000 per annum, facts and figures heretofore unknown.

Camille closes Bay St. Louis bridge
Editor's note:	This
article appeared in The Sea Coast Echo's September 4, 1969 issue. Hurricane Camille occurred on Aug. 18, 1969.
Traffic will be restricted to emergency use only on the Bay St. Louis and Biloxi-Ocean Springs bridges immediately,	the
Mississippi highway
department announced today. Contracts have been let to begin repairs on the bridges and the bridges now are under the jurisdiction of the contractors. People who use the bridges, including those to go to work should find another route, a highway spokesman said. Traffic on the bridges will be closed except for emergencies until about Sept. 20.
"No public improvement for Hancock County and Bay St. Louis has been so marked and outstanding as the Bay St. Louis bi-county bridge connecting Hancock and Harrison counties, at Bay St. Louis as western terminus and Henderson Point as the eastern point of beginning.
"This bridge over the waters of the Bay of St. Louis was completed and opened to traffic in the late spring of 1928.... Approximately 18 months were required to build the structure and same replaced a ferry boat that plied at two points and adjacent to the bridge. The ferry was inadequate to handle the increased traffic from time to time. It was the late Horatio S. Weston, of Logtown, president of the Board of Supervisors, who conceived the idea and pushed it along with associates until it became a reality.
"For fiscal year 1940-41 the Department spent the following in maintenance
of the structure: Labor, $5,728; Materials $3,540; and Equipment, $484.
"The Department has further provided, due to existing fire hazards, a fire boat with pump which is immediately available for use at any point on the structure where fire might originate. The operator for the boat is on duty at all times, as are the operators of the swing span proper.
"Our Highway Planning Survey shows that traffic on the bridge is as follows: Local passenger cars,1,270; Local trucks, 355; Foreign passenger cars, 940; and Foreign trucks, 80; Total 24-hour average traffic, 2,645.
"Because of the weekend traffic, the 1941 figures for July show on Saturdays, approximately 123% more; Sunday's 174% more than average week days.
Chief bridge tender is D.E. Martin of Bay St. Louis, and other attendants are P.A. McCollister of Pass Christian and David Ladner of Bay St. Louis."
