making great strides, and living up to its name

Waveland began 1999 with an almost overwhelming list of projects, but with the teamwork of all the departments, dedication of the city work force, some new equipment, a
balanced budget, good weather and a little luck, great strides were made in both long- and short-term goals. And it all started by setting a course and beginning work.
The city received grants to do a number of drainage projects. It is

hard to imagine the vast array of items removed while trying to restore the natural flow lines. If you could imagine it, workers probably found it, railroad ties, shopping carts, windows, appliances, vehicles, trees and more. About 7 miles of natural drains were cleared and the work continues. In addition, three drainage projects by the state and federal governments were completed.
New equipment enabled the city to begin a new procedure for ditch and culvert work. More than 7 miles
Gas lines were expanded to serve new customers and more are being laid.
Over 12 miles of city streets were paved with the help of the County Board of Supervisors.
With the combined effort of city employees, the Sea Bees, local companies and volunteers, the little league parks and fields were renovated and new lighting installed.
The cemetery expansion was also started.

of ditch work was completed in critical areas and also continues. More than 100 culverts that had fallen into disuse were replaced and almost 500 were cleared of obstructions.
The city has also completed sewage expansion in a number of locations, which allowed new housing starts. Sewer and utility expansion on Hwy. 90 came close to completion. Fifteen new man holes and lift stations were installed to ensure better residential service. New water lines in residential areas have enabled more than 12 new fire hydrants to be installed to increase fire protection.

received, but the moneys remained in the pipeline at the year’s close.
However the Coleman Ave. playground was totally refurbished, complete with additional parking, new playground equipment, a gazebo and flowers. In addition, the Waveland Ave. and Hurlihy St. parks received extra attention and work continues.
The city was accepted in the “Destination Downtown” program, which will enable the city to acquire grants to refurbish Coleman Ave.
The dedicated men and women of the police and fire departments worked very hard. Continuing education and training grants such as COPS have enabled them to better serve and protect. K-9 officer Arno won awards for performance in nationwide competitions.
The Waveland Animal Shelter was totally refurbished and got a new director, Curtis Quate, who promises to continue the work on the shelter and rewrite outdated animal ordinances.
