Bay St Louis and Waveland grew in the 1950s with easier commutes to New Orleans, a low cost of living, moderate tax rates and numerous recreational opportunities. New construction methods introduced the use of wood-frame houses on concrete slab foundations in the 1950s. The Minimal Traditional style house at 610 Nicolson Avenue, built in 1951 (extant), is typical of house construction at this time.

The city’s African American community built several new churches and schools during this era. Robinson Chapel Church of God at 401 Washington Street was erected between 1950 and 1960. St. Rose De Lima School at 301 South Necaise Avenue was built between 1955 and 1959. It was adjacent to St. Rose De Lima Church, built in 1926 for a black, Catholic congregation. The
