considered middle-class at that time. As mentioned earlier, Germany was in political and economic turmoil in the 1840-50s which is no doubt why Carl Heitzmann left Germany for America.
On June 5, 1854, Carl arrived at the Port of New Orleans, LA on the Ship Neptune after setting sail from the Port of Bremen, Germany. The Neptune was a 690 ton passenger ship, built in 1850, and was captained by Martin Bahle. Passenger #71 is ?Carl Heizmann,? age 25, bom ?Schweibach? with occupation listed as ?blacksmith.? It does not appear he was traveling with any friend or relative that can be identified. This record is found at the New Orleans Public Library, film #40, Passenger Lists of Vessels Arriving at New Orleans, LA (1820-1902), List #183-385. With Carl in America, we will now back up and cover his ancestors, siblings, and other relatives in Germany.
