1896-1903
PUBLIC SCHOOL RECORDS
I was able to check certain public school records in the courthouse in Hancock County, Bay St. Louis. These were annual books prepared of all the educable students in Hancock County each year as mandated by law that such lists be compiled. This included making a compilation of both the white and black educable students and youngsters. At a quick glance the only books I saw available to look at were the 1896 book the 1900 book and the 1902 book. I first examined the 1896 book and did not find Mr. N. G. Scott's name listed anywhere nor any of his sons or family listed anywhere in that book. This may mean that the Scotts did not come to Bay St. Louis early enough in 1896 to be included on this list. I looked in the 1900 book and it indicates in that book that there is an N. G. Scott who lives on Front Street and he has three children: "Wyat Scott, age 13, male"; "Norman Scott, age 11,	male"; Nathalie Scott, age 9,
female." This would indicate	that the survey or recordation was
apparently in the first half of the year. Natalie became 10 on July 17 of 1900 yet	this entry lists her as	9 years	old.
Apparently the	list	was made sometime prior	to July	of 1900.
Please note that the Scotts were listed in the 3rd Ward of Bay St. Louis on Front Street. No further address is given.
I also looked at the 1902 education records. I found the N. G. Scott family in the 3rd Ward, Bay St. Louis. It lists N. G. Scott. It also lists "Norman Scott, age 13, male, Front Street"; Nathalie Scott, age 11 - female"; "John W. Scott, age 15, male". It may be that John Wyeth Scott was the listed last in 1902 because he was not present at	home when the survey was taken.	I
believe this is the year he was attending prep school at Sewanee, Tennessee. The 1902 entries also indicate they are on Front Street; other families also listed as being on Front Street include the Louis Spotorno family. The Spotorno family has six kids; the Yeni	family is also listed. This	is Mrs.	L. Yeni.	She
has two kids.	They	are apparently neighbors of the	Scotts.	Also
in third ward Bay St. Louis is the John Osoinach family and their children include a son John A. Osoinach, 11 and then Henry W. Osoinach who is 9 years old and Clarence Osoinach who is 6 years old. Other families listed in the 3rd Ward include the Fayard family, Jacob Heitzman, who had six kids with ages ranging from 6 to 19). In the 2nd Ward is listed W. F. McDonald (on Railroad Street) whose children include Vance McDonald, 18, male; Prather McDonald, age 15, male; Percy McDonald, age 12, male; and Paulini McDonald, age 8.
