On This Day In...

1866

May 5th - The Circuit Court for Hancock County adjourns and the jury acquits a Mr. Schenks - defended by Roderick Seal - for the murder of Henry S. Jopes. The two day trial attracted quite a bit of attention and because there was not a single hotel in Gainesville, spectators had to rely on the hospitality of the town’s citizens.
