Mrs. Margaret M. Gibbens 111 Citizen Street Bay St. Louis, Ms. 39520 Mr. Elbert Hilliard, Director Mississippi Department of Archives and Histoiry P. 0. Box 571 Jackson, Mississippi 39205 Dear Mr. Hilliard: I am writing to you for information for the Hancock County Historical Society. Our Society is interested in inquiring about the listing of homes in the National Register of Historic Places, As you are aware , we have many homes here in Hancock County that are of this category and should be registered. There are however, some which are homes now occupied and these questions have been put to us. If a person is to register a historic home what obligation does this put the resident under? Can a person request that the property no be put on tours? Some property owners would like to specify that the property not be ever subdivided or used for commercial purposes. Are there restrictions as to the improvements the owner is restricted to follow if remodeling? In short we would like a detailed specific set of rules that one would be obligated to follow should they allow us tc register t-.sir hon.ee or sites. The Society has the membership to search out these sites, and v;e also have I^r. Fred V/a^ners services if and when it would be needed. The National Trust advised me to request a publication from your depart- ment, How to Complete National Register Forms,, We also would like to know if there is a updated form we would need to use. I have attached the form that was formerly sent to us as your departments approved form. We will use this form unless advised to the contrary. We have recently within our Society formed a committee to work on the history of homes and si&es in the area of Hancock County and hope to be registering some of these. I would appreciate any information you may lend in this regard. October 13, 1976
