John Minor was born 1707, and on November 14, 1732, was married to Sara Carr, daughter of Major Thomas Carr and Mary Dabney Carr, of Caroline County, Virginia, He received as a wedding present from his father-in-law, Major Thomas Carr, his home estate known as "Topping Castle" which is located on the North bank of the North Anna River in Caroline County, Virginia.

Cornelious D'Aubigne, a Huguenot, escaped from France to England where he changed the spelling of his name to Cornelious Dabney. He then came to Virginia. His wife's name was Sara Jennings, their daughter, Mary Dabney, was the wife of Major Thomas Carr. Thus Mary Dabney became the first mother of the Carr family of Virginia, many of whom bear the name of Dabney Carr.
Will of Major Thomas Carr dated May 29, 1735, was probated 1738, at the Courthouse, Caroline County, Virginia, at Boling Green, Virginia.
